Tanisi,
A look at what is and how Rising Above, Regina Discipleship Project works.
• Crime is on the rise.
• Poverty is on the rise.
• Drug use is on the rise.
• A Crisis in healthcare.
Our current…
…Justice system creates recidivism.
…Welfare system creates poverty.
…Health system creates addictions.
…Education system creates ignorance.
And will continue to do so until the underlying social paradigm of each is changed.
The current Justice system creates recidivism.
The best way to make a man your enemy is to strip him of his dignity, or simply ignore him. The justice system does both.
It is unrealistic to expect a person to emerge from jail and become a productive citizen from that experience. Less than 0.001% are able to do that.
The current Welfare system creates poverty.
“The best way to kill a man is to pay him for doing nothing.” Cavin Helin, Dances with Dependency, 2006 Orca Spirit Publishing, Vancouver, BC
I estimate that, the number of people currently receiving assistance in Regina is such that they could fill every unskilled entry level position in the entire food and hospitality industry in Regina.
The current Health system creates addictions.
The introduction of EVERY harm reduction strategy in Regina has seen a proportionate increase in illicit and intravenous drug use every year.
This in turn increases crime, poverty, etc.
The current Education system creates ignorance.
As reported recently, according to an international study by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Saskatchewan students ranked second-worst in math scores and third worst in reading scores in all of Canada. Most students entering post-secondary education are deficient in numerous additional disciplines including logical and rational thinking.
So how does the Regina Discipleship Project help these social problems?
Over the past 25 years working among the wounded peoples of North Central, I have learned that when a person changes how they define themselves it changes their whole life. Identity is how you define yourself. How you define yourself is based on what you genuinely believe to be true.
Change how you define yourself, you change identity, you change your life.
If you define yourself as a disciple of Jesus Christ, that means that your purpose is to make disciples. Not just simply be Christian. Rather, being a disciple of Jesus Christ, who makes disciples.
Thus, I do not define myself as a Christian. I define myself as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Discipling works.
For example, I said above that it is unrealistic to expect a person to emerge from jail and become a productive citizen from that experience. Less than 0.001% of incarcerated individuals can do that, BUT the person who is discipled for a minimum of 2-3 years beginning in the latter part of their incarceration and continuing for 2 years on the street, has a 65-80% chance of becoming productive.
Does this work?
Ask Tyrone, Ryan, TJ, Chris, Mark Christian, Shelly, Janine, Peter & Christine, etc… or countless others we have discipled over the years.
I was recently asked, what are two things you want people to know right now about your ministry?
1. Increasing our resources will increase our impact.
I would like to teach groups, how to lead groups, to make disciples who make disciples.
In cooperation with Gentle Road Church, we are training six disciplers, have six current disciples, and others inspired and wanting to be discipled. Aside from this, Both Cory and I have two active disciples each, RDP has several alumni disciples, and one launched group (Exodus) that is dedicated to making disciples.
2. You are actively involved and a vital part of our discipling ministry when you are signed up to receive these ministry updates!
I am actively looking to increase my prayer partner support base by 300 individuals by December 31st. i.e. individuals signed up for my prayer ministry updates.
Prayer is paramount! Prayers for protection, prayers for provision, prayers for production, prayers for persistence, prayers for participation, prayers for guidance, inspiration, growth… but most of all for God to be glorified in the effectiveness of His Plan!
I KNOW THAT I KNOW THAT I KNOW that if people will pray, God will provide.
Please prayerfully consider who you know who may like to join this ministry and ask them if they would like to consider joining this ministry update.
Thank you, and God Bless,
Nick Helliwell
